Maramureș County has joined the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) in November 2020. The organisation was founded in 1971 by the first border regions which had started cross-border cooperation in Europe after the Second World War, strengthening the integration of citizens across national boundaries. Today it counts some 100 members from the European Union and its neighbouring countries.

AEBR works on behalf of European border and cross-border regions with the aim to:

• highlight their role in the political landscape;
• represent their common interests;
• enhance cooperation between border regions throughout Europe;
• promote exchanges of experience, information and solutions to common obstacles

The work of this organization is inspired by the European Charter for Border and Cross-Border Regions. One of the most important initiatives of this network is called: b-solutions, a pilot initiative to tackle legal and administrative border obstacles along EU internal land borders. It is promoted by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) and managed by the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR), financially supporting public bodies and cross-border structures to find solutions to cross-border challenges.

On the 5^th of November 2020, during the General Assembly and Annual Conference of AEBR, our county has officially been acknowledged as full member with a right to vote. The future cooperation of Maramures County and AEBR will be guided by the Statute and the European Charter for Border and Cross-Border Regions and will enrol within the organisation’s specific tasks force and working groups.
