Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County (Hungary)
The twinning relation between our county and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok has been formalized on the 8th of November 2004 when the cooperation and twinning agreement has been signed.
Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County is situated in the middle of the Great Hungarian Plain, in an area cut up by the rivers Tisza, Triple-Körös and Zagyva. It is 5,582km2 large (6% of the territory of Hungary) and the 371,000 inhabitants are living in 22 towns and 56 villages. The county has an advantageous traffic-geographical situation, eastern-western rail-and motorway main lines cross the area and Budapest airport is within an hour. The capital town of the county is the City of Szolnok that is one of the biggest city in North-Alföld Region and lies only 95 km from the capital, Budapest with its nearly 75,000 population.
The surface of the county is a perfect flatland, its most important natural values are the good soil, the thermal water treasures and a lost-lasting sparkling sunshine. The Tisza Lake and the National Park of Hortobágy attract numerous visitors to the county. Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok is an industrial-agricultural area. The county is traditionally called Hungary's "bread basket"; agriculture is the key economic sector, 70% of the crop land is used for agricultural purposes. Engineering industry has a significant role in the economy of the country, leading industries are the machine production and pharmaceutical industry. The cultural life of the county is rich and of wide range. The county has an excellent folk art heritage, there are many traditional festivals and events in the count and museums offers also many interesting experiences for the visitors The county has also, special and traditional dishes that belong to its living heritage, main gastronomical values are „Karcagi” mutton-stew, „Kevi” mutton-goulash and „isler” of Szolnok. Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County offers many possibilities for active tourism, eco-tourism, water tourism and also for fishing and hunting.

Signing the cooperation agreement
The twinning relation between our county and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok has been formalized on the 8th of November 2004 when the cooperation and twinning agreement has been signed.
Common activities within the twinning relation
Representatives of Maramureș County Council participated between the 1st and 3rd of May 2019, to “Days of Tisa Lake - Tomek” that took place in Tiszafured. The event involved the participation of folk craftsmen and local producers from Maramureș who promoted handicrafts, traditional local products and various types of bee products in the stands specially arranged for this occasion.
In May 2018, the vice-president of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Zsolt Berec accompanied by two representatives of the county’s General Assembly participated to the fourth edition of an iconic event of our region - Days of Maramures.
On the 18th of June 2015, in Szolnok took place an international conference that reunited the regions crossed by the river Tisa. Thus, our county together with the counties of Satu Mare (RO), Szabolcs-Szatmar- Bereg and Hajdu – Bihar (HU), the representatives of Zakarpatia oblastului (UA), Kosice region (SK) and Vojvodina region (SRB), decided to actively cooperate to sustain constant development for the areas that are growing around Tisa River.
In May 2015 the vice-president of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Zsolt Berec accompanied by two representatives of the county’s General Assembly participated to the very first edition of the Days of Maramures County. The event highlighted a festive meeting of the twin counties, but also our guests took part in a unique event – a bicycle parade that gave the opportunity to discover the town of Baia Mare.
Between 26th-27th of April 2013, our county was represented at the 15th edition of the Szolnok Tourism Fair, being the fourth participation of our county to this type of event, besides those of 2005, 2006 and 2007. The official representatives of the 2 counties took the opportunity to update the cooperation relation among the 2 counties given the administrative reform that the Hungarian local administration underwent.
In September 2010, 2009 and 2008 representatives of our county participated to three consecutive editions of Folkdancenet Festival, a European cultural program under the umbrella of the European Commission dedicated to create a network among artists and professionals in the field of traditional dancing. Our county was represented by the National Folk Assembly of Transylvania.
The date of 11th of April 2008, represents one of the most important landmarks in the cooperation among the two twin regions. On the 15th anniversary of the mutual exchanges, a common joint meeting of the Maramures County Council and the General Assembly of Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok County was organized. The example has been taken from the joint meeting of the Romanian and Hungarian governments that was organized in the same year. This initiative has been a premiere in the local administration context, as up to that moment, local authorities from 2 different countries never joined in a common meeting. During this event the common plan of activities for the ongoing year has been assumed, while several cooperation agreements have been signed between institutions under the coordination of Maramures County Council and similar ones from the Hungarian twin county, as for example: the county museums of art, the social and child welfare departments, the tourism offices, etc. In the following years these agreements gave the framework for a series of activities of mutual interest.
Over the years of 2008, 2007, 2006 bilateral meetings of the Environment Protection and Tourism committees from the 2 twin counties together with relevant stakeholders in this field, were organized in Baia Mare and in Szolnok. The main area of interest has been directed towards environment protection, water management, joint interests related to Tisa River, especially targeting the development of common projects for regional development and flood management.
In 2005 our county receives a delegation of representatives of the General Assembly of Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok county, accompanied by a number of 15 mayors. The role of this meeting was to encourage the establishment of diverse cooperation and of potential twinning relations among similar local authorities. This visit was the initiation of many successful cooperation between local authorities from the 2 counties that later even concluded twining agreements.
