The official signing of the Cooperation Agreement between Maramureș County and Podkarpackie Voivodship in the Republic of Poland took place on September 2nd, 2019, in Baia Mare.
The Podkarpackie Voivodship is considered a gateway to the European Union, land of modern economy, unpolluted natural environment. Located in the south-east of Poland, the Podkarpackie Region comprises an area of 18,000 km2 and has a population of over 2 million. Its neighbours include Slovakia in the south, and Ukraine in the east - across the external border of the European Union. This is also the cross-roads for the trading routes of Central Europe. The motorway linking Western and Eastern Europe, Via Carpathia designed to connect North and South in the future, as well as the modern airport with international passenger and cargo terminals are the reason why operations of numerous manufacturing, trading and logistics companies are located here. The region’s capital with a population of nearly 200,000, Rzeszów is a vibrant, youthful and modern city, one of the most rapidly growing urban agglomerations in Poland. This is also home to the Aviation Valley.

Aerospace, IT, and automotive industry as well as quality of life are four smart specializations of the Podkarpackie; they determine the directions for the region’s economic growth. COOPERATION RELATIONS BETWEEN MARAMUREȘ COUNTY AND PODKARPACKIE VOIVODESHIP

Signing the cooperation and twinning agreement

The official signing of the Cooperation Agreement between Maramureș County and Podkarpackie Voivodship in the Republic of Poland took place on September 2nd, 2019, in Baia Mare.

The official ceremony was also attended by Magdalena Szuber-Zasacka, in charge of business at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Bucharest.

Common activities within the twinning relation

The 4th edition of the Eastern Fair took place in Jasionka, Poland, between the 4th-5th February 2020, simultaneously with the 13-th edition of the "EU-Ukraine" Economic Forum. At the invitation of the Institute for Eastern Studies and based on the newly signed cooperation agreement, Maramures County participated in the event with a presentation and promotion stand. The Maramures delegation participated with two presentations at the "EU-Ukraine" Economic Forum in the panels "Environment - Heritage - Society: a chance for the Carpathian macro-region" and "Tourism as a powerful tool for economic development".
At the same time, the stand of Maramureș County represented the attraction of the Eastern Fair, being visited by many participants, but also by the Marshal of Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Wladyslaw Ortyl and the president of the Institute for Eastern Studies, Zygmund Berdichowsky, who were extremely interested in the news and tourism attraction of our county.
During 1st-2nd September 2019, the official visit to Maramureș of the Podkarpackie voivodship delegation took place, in order to officially sign the collaboration and twinning agreement. On this occasion, visits were made to several economic objectives in Maramureș: Maramureș International Airport, ATP Tech Center Baia Mare, the company with Polish capital Blacho Trapez from Baia Mare and Universal Alloy Corporation from Dumbrăvița. The two senior officials said they were satisfied with the objectives achieved on this occasion, and re-assured their mutual support in promoting the common activities of the two regions.
During the fifth edition of “Maramureș Days - Come along to Maramureș” that took place between 17th–19th May 2019, Maramureș County was visited by an official delegation of Podkarpackie Voivodship that joined all the events organized on this occasion. At the end of the visit, the Polish delegates were delighted with the traditions and customs found in Maramureș and promised to share with their friends all these positive experiences.
During 14th-15th March 2019, on the occasion of the eigth edition of the Summit of Regions and Cities, co-organized by the European Committee of the Regions, the president of the Maramureș County Council, Gabriel-Valer Zetea met again with the Marshal of Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Wladyslaw Ortyl, to discuss the status of the twinning and cooperation agreement. At the same time, current issues were discussed regarding the cooperation of the regions for local economic development.
During 24th-25th January 2019, a delegation of the Maramureș County Council participated to the 12-th edition of the Europe-Ukraine Economic Forum in Rzeszow, organized by the Institute for Eastern Studies in Warsaw and the Podkarpackie region (Poland).

During the Forum, Maramureș County was presented at the round table with the theme “Tourism and economic development of cities and regions” in the section “Society and Reforms”. On the same occasion, Gabriel Valer Zetea, President of the Maramureș County Council and Florentin Tuș, President of the Maramureș Chamber of Commerce and Industry met at the Polish Economic Forum with Mieczyslaw Lagowski, President of the Rzeszow Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The three officials discussed new opportunities for local economic development that can be identified in each region, as well as how new economic relations between economic agents can be initiated and strengthened. Also on this occasion, the President of the Maramureș County Council, handed over to the Marshal of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, the letter of proposal for a twinning between the two regions and the opening of negotiations for signing a cooperation agreement.
