Ivano-Frankivsk region (Ukraine)
The initial cooperation agreement has been signed on the 29th of March 2008 followed by a second protocol that came as a completion to sustain the common implementation of cross border cooperation projects.
Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast is an oblast in western Ukraine, with a 50-km long state border with Romania (Maramureș County) to its immediate south. It is situated partly in the Eastern European Plain and partly at the Carpathian Foothills. The oblast is divided into three regions: mountainous, pre-mountainous, and plains. With a population of 1,382,352 inhabitants, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast is administratively subdivided into 14 districts (raions) as well as 6 cities (municipalities) with the administrative center of the region in Ivano-Frankivsk city.
Beginning from the middle of ХVII century, on the region's territory the important trade routes from Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania north to Lviv, the Baltic States, and Russia have been formed. Nowadays, Ivano-Frankivsk Region has considerable possibilities for international cooperation development. Investments in the region are aimed at the environmentally friendly high-tech sectors, in particular, precision engineering, instrument-making industry and production of electronic and electrical goods. The priority projects are oriented at transport infrastructure development, improvement of access to the region.
Large prospects are related to the closeness of the Carpathians – the unique area of recreation and tourism.
The Carpathian Mountains are covered with snow for up to five months of the year, offering favorable conditions for those interested in skiing and other winter sports. Ivano-Frankivsk region is a wonderful holiday destination all year round.

COOPERATION RELATIONS BETWEEN MARAMUREȘ COUNTY AND IVANO-FRANKIVSK REGION
Signing of the cooperation and twinning agreement
The initial cooperation agreement has been signed on the 29th of March 2008 followed by a second protocol that came as a completion to sustain the common implementation of cross border cooperation projects.
Common activities within the twinning relation
Official delegates from Ivano-Frankivsk twinning region participated in the traditional events organized by our institution, respectively in the 11th edition of the event “Christmas in Maramures, organized on 20-22 December 2019. A Group of carolers from Verkhovina and the folk group "Dniester Bells" delighted spectators with Christmas Ukrainian traditions.
The official delegates from the Ivano Frankivsk region participated between 17-19 May 2019 to the 5th edition of “Maramures Days - Come along to Maramures”, together with the Hutule Girls Ensemble from Verkhovyna.
In March 2018, a delegation of Ivano Frankivsk region with representatives of Verhovina State Administration and Verhovina Natural Park visited our county in order to meet relevant stakeholders for commonly submiting projects under the umbrella of ENI CBC 2014-2020 cross border cooperation program.
On the 18th of September 2014, representatives of the Operational Centre of the Emergency Department within the Ivano-Frankivsk region visited our county in order to set up a common project under the Romanian-Ukrainian Operational Program 2014-2020. The project is intended to implement an informational system to manage emergency risk events within the common border area. The common interest of the 2 twinned regions in the field of health and risks prevention has a long history of initiatives and exchanges of experience.
Throughout 2013, several meetings took place among counterparts from the medical and health care area, medical staff and risk management specialists in the 2 twinned regions. Moreover, on the 25th of October 2013 a common declaration for cooperation in the field of healthcare, medical assistance in the emergency medical system, has been signed among the representatives of the national ministries of health with the direct involvement and lobby of the 2 twinned entities - Maramures county and Ivano-Frankivsk State Administration.
Another active component in the cooperation of the 2 twin regions has been represented by a mutual interest to promote and implement cross border cooperation projects, as follows:
Within ENPI HU-SK- RO-UA Cross border Cooperation Program, the following projects have been implemented:
- CBC Parliament – a virtual parliament that set up several digital instruments to communicate and exchange information in the border areas of Slovakia-Romania-Hungary-Ukraine:
- European Exchange School- a cooperation platform for educational organizations in the border areas of Slovakia-Romania-Hungary-Ukraine, where Maramures County Council and Energy Management Agency of Maramureş joined forces in a common partnership with partners from Kosice, Szabolcs Szatmar Bereg and Ivano Frankivsk:
- Increasing the management capacity and response in case of natural disasters in the cross border area:
- RoUaSoil – the management of petrol contaminated sites where Maramures County Council and the Cluj Napoca University- the Baia Mare branch joined forces in a common partnership.
Whithin Phare CBC Cooperation Program the following projects have been implemented:
- NEURON – network for integrated coordination and monitoring of local development strategies in the border areas of Maramureş – Zakarpatia -Ivano Frankivsk regions;
- Transcarpathian Tourism - network for promoting tourism in the border areas of Maramureş - Zakarpatia - Ivano Frankivsk regions;
- GRANITA MM – developing and managing the border infrastructure for increased in the border areas of Maramureş - Zakarpatia;
- MAGIC – communication instruments and socio-economic development in the border area; • ECOTUR – tourism in the Transcarpathian region;
- AQUA ROUA – a clean environment in the upper Tisa River.
