In April 2024, Maramureș County Council began implementing, in an international partnership, the CIBUS project - Reducing Food Loss and Waste in Europe, funded by the INTERREG EUROPE 2021 - 2027 program, which will run from 1st of April 2024 to 30th of June 2028.


The CIBUS project, whose name comes from Latin and means food - nutrition, has as general objective reducing food loss and waste along the food production and supply chain by increasing the capacity of regional authorities to develop and implement innovative public policies.

The project partnership consists of the Bulgarian Association of Municipal Environmental Experts from Bulgaria as the lead partner, along with the following project partners: Nicosia Development Agency from Cyprus, Alto Minho Inter-municipal Community from Portugal, Vejle Municipality from Denmark, Häme Regional Council and Häme University of Applied Sciences from Finland, Galway County Council from Ireland, City of Liège from Belgium, and Maramureș County Council from Romania.

The total budget of the project is 2,136,491 euros, and the budget for Maramureș County is 199,320 euros of which 80% is non-reimbursable European funding, 18% national co-financing, and 2% co-financing by Maramureș County Council.

The main activities envisaged include organizing an inter-regional learning process through exchanges of experiences based on case studies and evaluating the status of each partner region in the field of food waste. Eight inter-regional meetings will be organized focusing on the following topics:

• Factors contributing to food loss and waste along the food production and supply chain;
• Innovation in the field of food waste prevention measures;
• Needs identified at the political, practical, and financial levels related to food waste prevention.

Maramureș County Council is currently implementing 3 projects funded through the Interreg Europe 2021 - 2027 Program, namely the "SIRM - Socio-Economic Integration of Refugees and Migrants" project, funded through call 1, as well as the projects funded through call 2, namely "OpenRegioCulture - Co-creating an Accessible Climate for Cultural Resources for People with Special Needs" and "CIBUS - Reducing Food Loss and Waste in Europe".
